One of the most common questions I get from patients is: “Should I choose Invisalign or braces?” Deciding to straighten your teeth is exciting, but with so many factors to consider, it can also feel overwhelming. The good news? I’m here to break it all down. I got you.

By the end of this, you’ll clearly understand both options, their benefits, limitations, and which might suit your unique needs. I always start by understanding my patients, their lifestyle, character, work limitations, and yes, even their vibes. (It’s a superpower I’m proud of!)
What Are Invisalign and Braces?
Both Invisalign and braces are orthodontic appliances designed to fix misaligned teeth and imbalanced bites. Both treatments essentially move teeth within the jawbone. Though their job is similar, they work differently.
Invisalign: Invisalign is a set of clear, custom-made aligners that you wear in sequence to gradually shift your teeth into the desired final location. These aligners, made from smooth BPA-free plastic, are custom-made to fit your teeth using advanced 3D scanning (like the iTero scanner we use in our office). Invisalign receives your scans, photos, and x-rays and builds a 3D simulation to move your teeth into the desired position. So, throughout the treatment, we have a visual plan of our journey, and we have measurement tables that inform us if your teeth are tracking or not. (i.e., I will know if you’re not wearing your aligners :)
Traditional Braces: Braces use metal brackets that we attach to your teeth, connected by wires and rubber bands. Over time, they gently move your teeth into position. Braces are a tried-and-true method, especially for complex cases, children and non-compliant adults (I will explain that shortly).
Now, let’s dive into appearance, comfort, treatment time, cost, and other key differences.
1. Appearance/ Braces: Metal brackets are noticeable, though colorful bands can make them more appealing. I will not lie, they are visible, but they are a sign that you care about your teeth. Invisalign: For discretion, Invisalign is a clear winner. The aligners are almost invisible when worn, making them ideal for adults or teens, and they can be taken out for important meetings, events or during intimacy (I will have a separate blog post about that). Verdict: Invisalign wins in appearance.
2. Comfort/ Braces: Braces may cause discomfort, especially after adjustments. The brackets and wires may poke or irritate your cheeks or lips, but we try to cinch (bend) the wire at the back if possible, and orthodontic wax helps a lot. Invisalign: Invisalign aligners are smooth and custom-fit, making them more comfortable. Some mild soreness or pressure may occur with new aligners, showing your teeth are moving. But I always tell my patients, ortho pressure is good, welcome it as a friend bearing free tickets to a concert. Verdict: Invisalign is generally more comfortable, though both options require an adjustment period. After all, they’re both working toward the same goal, moving teeth within the jawbone.
3. Treatment Time/ Braces: Treatment typically takes 18 months to 3 years, depending on the complexity of the case. They work 24/7 since they’re fixed. Invisalign: Treatment often takes 12 to 18 months, but aligners must be worn 22 hours a day to stay on track. Skipping wear time can delay results. Verdict: Invisalign can be faster for minor corrections, but braces are better for complex cases.
4. Maintenance and Convenience/ Braces: Braces require extra care when brushing and flossing, using tools like floss threaders. We have a list of no-no foods to avoid, which we hand out to you on braces application day. Invisalign: Invisalign is removable, so business is usual when it comes to brushing, flossing and eating. However, aligners must be cleaned to prevent staining or bacterial growth. I usually give my patients different options of cleaning solutions or tablets, in addition to tested home remedies (yes, I like all things natural). Verdict: Invisalign offers more flexibility and convenience.
5. Cost: Costs vary based on complexity and location. Braces and Invisalign are usually similar in price, though Invisalign can sometimes cost more due to advanced technology. Tip: Think of orthodontic treatment as an investment in your health.
6. Case Complexity: Though braces are considered best for severe cases, I have used Invisalign and other clear aligner brands to treat extremely difficult cases that yielded wonderful results, though with a little bit of extra time and patience. My biggest recommendation for braces is “non-compliance for aligners.” If I feel that my prospective patient is not sure about committing to proper wear and care of Invisalign, I immediately recommend braces to avoid the extra costs of having to change treatment type in the middle of the journey. All my young patients, my free-spirited renegades, and my extremely-busy, not-knowing-what-day-it-is patients will be directed to braces. Everyone else who can commit to maintaining proper wear schedules can enjoy the benefits of Invisalign. In some unique cases, I’ve used a combination of both treatments at the same time (i.e., upper braces, lower Invisalign). Verdict: Braces is a more predictable treatment for children and patients who cannot comply with wearing Invisalign, while Invisalign is ideal for compliant patients.
In my experience, case severity is no longer the main deciding factor. Aligners, when used correctly, can handle even complex cases, though extra time and patience may be required.
7. Visits: In both cases, we’ll see you every 8–12 weeks depending on your treatment plan. Usually, the first visit (whether the Invisalign insertion or the bracketing for braces) is an hour-long appointment, because it also involves providing you with instructions of wear and care. The following check-up visits take 15–20 minutes and are designed for tracking your progress, checking your gums, delivering more aligners or changing wires in case of braces. Verdict: No difference between Invisalign and braces visits. You’re stuck with having to visit us every 8–12 weeks until your teeth are straight :)
Now, the big question is: Which Option Is Right for You?
If we consider that cost is roughly the same, treatment duration is within a six-month difference, and frequency of visits is the same, we’re left with the following questions to ask yourself: How important is appearance during treatment? Do I have complex alignment or bite issues that may take too long with aligners? Can I commit to wearing aligners 22 hours a day, or do I get bored easily? Do I want the flexibility to remove my appliance? What does the treating dentist recommend based on their previous similar cases? Do I have a life event that requires a faster treatment to favor Invisalign (wedding, engagement, graduation, new job, relocation/loss of benefits, etc.)? How does my partner feel about braces? Are they comfortable with them? (Trust me, this matters more than you might think!) Do I love myself enough to make minor lifestyle changes (brushing, compliance, etc.) for 12–18 months to finish orthodontic treatment without delays?
Not sure? That’s where consultations help! I can assess your smile, evaluate the severity of your case, and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your goals. Using the iTero scanner, we can also show you a preview of your future smile within 2 minutes of the scan. Also, I will do some “soul gazing” and discover your compliance level. This is one of my superpowers.
