North Star Dentistry is excited to be part of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which allows us to provide dental care for many more patients in the Hamilton and St. Catharines area.


What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The CDCP is a federal initiative designed to provide affordable dental care to uninsured Canadians with a household income under $90,000. 


Key Features:

  • Coverage for essential preventive, diagnostic,  restorative, and surgical dental care.
  • Focus on preventive care to reduce health system  strain.
  • Administered federally through Health Canada.


Who is Eligible for the CDCP?

To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan in Mississauga:

  • Age: 18 years or older (children’s coverage is separate).
  • Income: Household income less than $90,000/year.
  • Insurance: No access to private dental insurance.
  • Residency: Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

What Services Are Covered?

The CDCP offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Full mouth assessments and routine Exams 
  • Dental Cleanings (scaling and polishing)
  • Deep cleaning (root planing)
  • Fluoride treatments
  • X-rays
  • Fillings
  • Porcelain Crowns (partial coverage, limited)*
  • Root canals
  • Dentures (complete and partial dentures) and limited repairs of existing dentures.
  • Extractions*


What Services Are Not Covered?

  • Dental Implants
  • Orthodontics (braces and Invisalign)
  • Porcelain Bridges.
  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Teeth Whitening

*More advanced procedures may require pre-authorization.


How to Apply for the CDCP in Ontario

Health Canada has launched a secure portal for applications to the CDCP. Applying is simple and fully online. Below is a step-by-step guide for getting your CDCP coverage:


Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet these criteria:

  • Age: 18 years or older (children coverage is separate).
  • Income: Adjusted Family Net Income is below $90,000
  • Insurance: No access to private dental insurance
  • Residency: Canadian citizen or permanent resident


Step 2: Gather Required Documents

You’ll need the following documents to apply:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Proof of Income (such as CRA Notice of Assessment)
  • Proof of Residency (driver’s license, utility bill, etc.)
  • Statement confirming no private dental insurance


Step 3: Apply Online

Applications are processed through a secure Health Canada portal:

  • Visit the Canada Dental Care Plan Application Portal
  • Create or log in to your account
  • Complete the application form
  • Upload the required documents if prompted


Step 4: Wait for Approval

Once submitted, your application will be reviewed. Health Canada may contact you for additional information.

You’ll receive an approval letter or email outlining your coverage start date.


Step 5: Book Your Dental Appointment

After receiving approval, you can book an appointment with participating providers like North Star Dentistry.
