Early (Phase I) orthodontic treatment can do more than straighten teeth. By guiding jaw growth, creating space for adult teeth, and supporting healthy nasal breathing, we help children build a foundation for lifelong oral and overall health. At North Star Dentistry, we look beyond the smile to the airway, because how your child breathes affects how they sleep, grow, and thrive.
When a child’s airway is restricted whether from allergies, enlarged tonsils, or chronic congestion, they naturally turn to mouth-breathing. Just as a tree bends toward the light, a child’s face and jaws grow around the way they breathe. If the airway isn’t fully open, tongue posture changes and the upper jaw may not develop to its full width, leading to a narrower palate, crowded teeth, and altered facial growth. This can also contribute to snoring, restless sleep, poor attention and other behavioural or cognitive changes.
By expanding the arches and encouraging proper jaw growth, we can help “make space” for the tongue, open the nasal airway, and set your child up for healthier breathing patterns and better sleep.
These are all red flags that an airway-focused orthodontic check-up could be valuable between ages 6–11, when growth is most responsive to gentle guidance.
Every child’s plan is personalized, but early interceptive care often includes:
1. Arch Expansion
Gentle appliances widen narrow arches, create room for incoming adult teeth, and increase nasal airway volume. This reduces the need for extractions later and shortens time in braces.
2. Habit and Myofunctional Support
Addressing thumb habits, retraining tongue posture, and promoting nasal breathing help stabilize results and encourage balanced facial growth.
3. Growth Guidance
When jaw relationships need correction, functional appliances can gently redirect growth while bones are still developing, making later treatment simpler.
Waiting can miss the best growth window. By starting earlier, we can influence jaw and airway development, making later treatment less invasive and more effective. In many cases, Phase I treatment sets the stage for a shorter, easier and more affordable Phase II (braces or aligners in the teen years).
When to schedule an evaluation for airway-focused Phase I orthodontic treatment:
1- First check-up: by age 6, or earlier if concerns like snoring or chronic mouth-breathing are present. In this appointment, we take the child's first panoramic xray.
2- Best window for Phase I: typically between ages 7–11, when growth can be gently guided.
We believe a beautiful smile begins early in childhood with healthy breathing, restful sleep, and proper growth. That’s why our orthodontic care always starts with the airway. At your child’s evaluation, we’ll assess dental arches, bite, tongue posture, habits, and breathing patterns before recommending a plan.
